I have decided what I've know for awhile now; I need to update my blog more often! ['Yay!', scream some from the audience].
I think what has been putting me off is a few things:
1) Facebook - I spend WAY too much time on there. But, there is something to be said for the format of Facebook. You can update with just one line to tell people what you are doing. For example, I did lots of busy work yesterday and finished many things I needed/wanted to do yesterday - got a skirt for my Irish Dance lessons I started a few weeks ago, caught up on some paperwork from school, graded some papers, got some pictures developed for my classroom.... I could update all of this to my 'friends' (a somewhat loose term on Facebook) with one simple statement:
Kathy did a fairly good job today; checked off many little tasks on the ever expanding 'To Do' list.
There, easy enough. I seem to find time to write one thing in the morning and one thing at night. But, to do the same thing on a blog just seems like a waste. There should be more explained in a blog... but maybe that's just my impression of what I want this blog to be.
2) After the summer was over, school started pretty hard. I haven't been a classroom teacher in 3 years. So, it was a lot to jump back into. I LOVE my class; they are great kids! I now have lessons to plan, papers to grade, etc... that has taken up a lot of time. My afternoons are no longer as free as they were when I worked in special ed. But, as Thanksgiving rolls around, I'm starting to stay on top of more things with more regularity.
3) Activities - we have pretty busy weeks now. I have band on Monday nights, started Irish Dance on Tuesday nights, Heather has started up ballet/tap again on Wednesday. Kailey has gymnastics on Saturday (Heather dropped that this week). Bill plays guitar with our friend, Kevin, one a week or more so they can prepare for bar gig in January. Dinners, papers, lawn care, etc..
4) Pictures - I want to update the blog with pictures as often as possible. A post without pictures doesn't make me as happy. But, I read others who don't have pictures for every post and I love to read those. So, maybe I can try to at least write something even if I don't have a picture to post of the event.
5) The longer I wait to update this blog, the more guilty I feel for not updating it. And, I feel like I need to 'catch up' so I have everything documented. Obviously, that's a vicious cycle which will never fix itself.
Therefore, I need to start looking at this as simply a snapshot of our life. In education, some of the cumulative tests we give and some of the standardized tests we administer are taken as a complete view of the child. However, what I always try to tell parents is that all this data offers us is a snapshot of what a child can do on that particular day, under that particular circumstance. Same should be thought of with the blog - this will just be used to give a snapshot of what our family/kids are doing at a particular place and time.
So, now, if I can remember that, I won't feel as bad about not updated EVERYTHING we do. This is just used to help remember some of the events in our family.
This may upset some who would like this to be more comprehensive, but hey, if I at least start an incomplete and scattered update pattern, that should be better than the last few months of just nothing!
